Frequently Asked Questions
-
Q: I’m not a music major/minor. Can I join VCO?
A: Yes! VCO is the non-music major orchestra for undergraduates, graduate students, faculty and staff at Vanderbilt University. There is also the university orchestra for music majors at the Blair School of Music. Email orchestra@vanderbilt.edu for more information, and keep an eye out for audition forms going out in the beginning of the semester!
Q: I don't have much experience/haven't played since high school. Can I still join?
A: We take members from many different levels, so we strongly encourage you to audition. The majority of our members are non-music majors and are in different schools and walks of life (from undergraduates to professors!). If time or level of repertoire is a concern for being in the full orchestra, you have the opportunity to play with a chamber group or take part in other programs offered by VCO.
Q: I did not bring my instrument to campus. Can I rent one?
A: Yes, check the Rental & Financial Aid page for more information.
Q: Are there social opportunities within VCO aside from rehearsals?
A: Yes! There are many ways we foster the VCO community. We hold social events including NSO (Nashville Symphony Orchestra) field trips, our annual Date Party, and the big-little family program. In the past, we’ve also held movie nights, the VCOlympics, and retreats! (We <3 VCO :) )
Q: Are there membership dues?
A: Yes, our dues are $10/year for each member. Experience Vanderbilt funds can be used towards our dues. For more financial aid questions, go to the Rental & Financial Aid page.
Q: How do members get to Music Rehearsal Hall every week?
A: Most VCO members walk to rehearsal, which is held at Music Rehearsal Hall, but Vanderbilt provides a shuttle service called VandyRide that stops at every major dorm on campus (take the Black Route and get off at Blakemore House). Specific accommodations for big instruments (bass, harp) will be made on a case-by-case basis.
Q: How is the VCO repertoire chosen?
A: Before the upcoming semester, members submit music recommendations. The music directors carefully look over and categorize them before sending them out to a vote, and the members vote for what they would like to play.
Q: Are there other music organizations on campus?
A: Absolutely. We frequently partner with UCB (University Concert Band) and VUCC (Vanderbilt University Concert Choir) for various events. The Blair School of Music offers various music ensembles primarily for music majors and high-level non-music majors. Look through AnchorLink or VPAC for more information.
Q: Who can I contact for more information?
A: Email orchestra@vanderbilt.edu, message us through Instagram, or reach out to any board member.
